Key things to remember when trying to project a positive self image

Some things to remember when trying to project a positive self image

1.    Say what you can do not what you can’t do.  Set positive expectations.

2.    Create an image of reliability.  A person that gets things done. People who say I will try, don’t count on it. What someone says they should do versus what they will do is a big difference.  Don’t be wishy washy.

3.    Set positive expectations- don’t say what you think someone wants to hear.

4.    Another image of someone who projects a positive self image is they Display integrity.

Negative Words and Phrases

There are some key words and phrases that people should avoid when trying to project a positive self image.

1.    Problem – A better choice is challenge.  If you say we have a problem, people right away think of the worse.
2.    Unfortunately – A better word is fortunately.
3.    To be honest with you - There is no alternate.  Don't say it.  It implies that generally you are not honest but you are being honest in this particular situation.

Don’t say "I’ll have to" say "I’d be glad to”

To a neighbor don't say "We’ll have to get together for dinner” instead you should say "we would love to get together for dinner".

Changing one word can make the difference.

Tone of voice

A person's tone can imply a lot.  A person that is angry, usually sounds angry.  If a person is asked something in an unfriendly tone, the response will most likely be negative.  A person who is pre-occupied may ask a question sounding dis-interested.  If an employee is giving a presentation to a client with no enthusiasm, chances are the clients won't be enthused.

It is important when speaking that your tone is:
interesting
not too low
not too high
not sarcastic
not angry

A tone can bring a completely different meaning to a person's words without them even realizing it.

There's a reason your mom probably said "don't use that tone with me"!

It is not what you say, but how you say it!

Body Language

Did you know that projecting a positive self-image can either make or break a first impression? It can also make or break a first date, job interview or getting a promotion.

We all know the person that is a slumper, or the person who has a constant scowl, or the person that stands there with their arms crossed in front of them.  Are you one of these?

This picture has 24 different looks.  It is very easy to see which ones are standoffish and which ones are an image you want to portray.

It is important to be self aware of your body language especially in tense situations.
